CRG BMD|IN Inauguration

"Rare diseases are those that occur in less than 1 per 1000 population. About 80 percent of these rare disorders are due to mutations in a genes, and 95 percent of them do not have even one treatment.Bone marrow disorders (BMDs) constitute a group of rare disorders characterized by defects in the stem cells of the bone marrow leading to lack of production of one or more essential blood cells.According to the National Policy for treatment of rare diseases (2017, Govt. of India), rare diseases in India affect a staggering 72 to 96 million people. With the prediction that 1 out of every 20 children born in urban India suffer from some kind of rare diseases.Realizing the need for understanding the genetics of these conditions and their relevance in the clinical manifestations through a concerted efforts of clinicians and basic scientists to develop novel therapeutics for these conditions the Consortium of Rare Genetic and Bone Marrow Disorders India Network@NITTEDU (CRG.BMD|IN) has been founded by Prof. Dr. Anirban Chakraborty, Deputy Director ,NUCSER, Mangaluru and Dr Arati Khanna Gupta,Genetic consultant, Bangalore. The Chief guest for the event was Prof. Paul Coucke, Director, Centre for Medical Genetics, Ghent University, Belgium. The guest of Eminence, Prof. T. S Rao, former advisor, Department of Biotechnology, India. A website for the consortium was launched by the honourable Chancellor of Nitte DU,Shri Vinay Hegde who presided the event. Prof Dr. Indrani Karunasagar,Director (R&D), Nitte DU welcomed the gathering. Vice Chancellor NU Prof.Dr. Sateesh Kumar Bhandary conveyed his compliments for the success of this venture. This initiative by NITTE DU emphasizes the role of the universities in health science research and development across the country.
